biography

Duane Smith has a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Design from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and studied sustainable architecture at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. Duane began his career working at a variety of design consultancies and has contributed to projects for clients such as Samsung, Oxo, P&G, Symbol, and Nissan. His work crosses a broad range of disciplines including consumer electronics, housewares, apparel and accessories, medical equipment, furniture and lighting, graphic and packaging, architecture and brand identity.

In 2000, Duane co-founded Vessel, a Boston-based housewares design and distribution company with an award-winning line of lighting, tableware and furniture that was available in over 20 countries. Vessel’s product line included the well-recognized Candela® brand of rechargeable lights which received editorial coverage in hundreds of periodicals and books worldwide, won numerous international design awards, and has been included in a variety of exhibitions and museum collections.

Duane was also a co-founder of the conceptual design organization, Release1, which challenged people from many professions to think broadly about the contents of our world through ‘fictional’ product design.

Since 2009, Duane has held creative executive roles at Adidas group and Targus, and most recently has been a creative leadership consultant for a variety of companies, from consumer technology to cosmetics to fashion.
